Breadcrumbs--Promise Ring 5 (Everett)
I grew up on Ficlets. There, the writer inside me had a home. I'm a teacher now, and a 4th grader who reminds me so much of myself asked, "Why don't you share your writing with us?" So, I come tentatively, searching for a place to stretch my writing muscles again.
Sasha. Man, I'd completely wrecked her night. Go figure.
I pounded the steering wheel, trying to block out the iciness of the ring, the horror of Jessamine's eyes, the shame and frustration of ruining my sister's life. This was my fault--all of it.
A pothole provided me the jolt I needed. This was my fault, true, so I was going to make it better. For once, I would take care of Sasha, instead of the other way around.
Jaw set, knuckles white, I stared down the pavement in front of me and pressed harder on the gas pedal. For once in my life, I knew exactly what I had to do.
I had lost Jessamine for the moment, but I could tell she wasn't far off. I don't have a good way to explain that; it was not unlike that feeling you get when someone's staring at you from across a room, only more intense. She wasn't some stranger gazing off into space in my general direction. She was tracking me. Like an animal.
I smiled. She could follow my breadcrumbs all she wanted. She wouldn't find Hansel at the end.

Nice fairy tale reference. Jessamine is a fascinating character. Looking forward to knowing more about her role in all this.

Nice emotional switch! I like that he became determined and decided to care for Sasha for once.
