I talked to my boyfriend about my feelings of jealousy for my best friend's relationship.
"I get that you are protective of him. You've been really close for a long time."
"We were close, then we got together. It's all I know. It's a pattern, one that I have to break, even if it breaks me."
"So, you are suggesting we try this double date thing?"
"I just don't want to be pulled in opposite directions anymore."
He paused in thought for some time, his face unreadable. "Okay."
The four of us met in a restaurant bar and sat in a booth. Us ladies eyed each other. As stories began to be told and laughter shared, the tension eased. When we went to the restroom simultaneously, as ladies do, she said, "I really wanted your approval. I know how influential best friends can be. He really listens to your opinions."
My head whirled with this new thought. If I approved, then she was his, for better or worse. No matter what, I was still his best friend.
"You complement him. I can see why he likes you."
She smiled.

There are so many possible endings to this story, outcomes to this situation. This is probably the best one, though it isn't always the one that feels most satisfying. Ficlatte offers a unique opportunity to explore all the endings. Hmm...
