I was parked at the edge of the world. There was a hill at the very back of my parent's property that overlooked the neighbor's pasture filled with cows. It was a great place to stop and think. I had turned off the radio and watched the bovines graze. They didn't have a care in the world except for grass.
The phone rang and I jumped. It wasn't my best friend, though. It was my boyfriend.
"Hey, I'm on my way home. Where are you?"
"Uh, I'm on my way home, too."
"Okay, well, I picked up some stuff for homemade lasagna."
"Special night?" I allowed a smile to creep into my voice.
"Every night with you is special."
"Okay. See you soon."
Despite my efforts to conceal my frustration and anger with my best friend's antics, my boyfriend didn't deserve for me to take it out on him. I had to calm down before I got home. Focus on the positives.
At least someone loves me and thinks I'm the center of their universe.
I can't deny that same privilege to my best friend or I'm the bad one.
I need a new normal.

That opening line! The image of being on a precipice overlooking something serene around sunset evokes exactly the kind of liminality your narrator is feeling. That was genius.

Relationships are complicated, mostly because the people in them are complicated. And not knowing your own mind just makes it all worse.
