The train hissed as it prepared to leave. The whistle blew, signaling the last call for passengers to board.

I looked up into the face of best friend. In that moment I saw every escapade we'd ever had in reverse. I was left with the day we met. He'd leaned over to my group in 9th grade science and asked if his group was doing the task right. My assigned partners told him to bug off in much more colorful language, but I'd simply said, "yes".

He was dressed in his crisp military uniform, hair cut short, and I could see his eyes clearly. They were full of stern stuff. He was ready to face his fate.

This is the part in the movies where the secret love is revealed and the two friends kiss and there is a bittersweet crying moment.

He simply asked, "Will you look after my Mom?"

I said, "yes".

Then he nodded and turned and boarded the train.

I realized we ended on the same note where we began; with a definitive 'yes' from me.

Always for him, it was yes.

I found this really beautiful. I love this narrative--the one of unrequited love between best friends. Also, the repetition of "yes" is very effective to make this piece complete.
