Beat a Retreat

slapdashmonuments

Inspiration hits with a flash, stories written on the go. A rumble of laughter and the tale is heard only in echoes. The wind blows me in a new direction. Whom shall I visit next?

You know that words can hurt

Even more than a stick or a stone.

A pen destroys more than a sword

A doctor’s care I can’t afford

But there’s safety in staying alert;

Still more, in life alone.

I see where I went wrong;

I’m uncertain what I should have done.

I grew attached before I knew

The new friend I was talking to.

I don’t know why my feeling’s so strong.

Should I remain, or run?

You were not over-kind,

But of course you must do as you will.

So thank you; you have made it plain

You don’t accept me. I’ll maintain

A safe distance. Fare well. I’m resigned.

Be well. Take care. I’ll chill.

I need to find a way

To remain in control of my heart.

I’ve always loved more than I should;

Too fast, as well. I’m just no good,

For I always get carried away;

It’s better not to start.

And so, it’s time to leave.

I shall miss all my friends, but it’s best.

Thus, I’ll protect my friends from pain

I cannot cause you harm again

That’s the finest thing I could achieve.

Good-bye, my dears. Be blessed.
