The moat had not yet been filled the day I crossed the drawbridge. The main structure was standing tall, but not all the wings and towers and battlements had been completed.

Hammers, saws, welders, and all sorts of construction beeps and hums rang for weeks outside, but I had found my room.

The windows were tall and looked out over the garden, still being planted. I watched a gnome family move in near the koi pond, while tiny fairies took quiet residence in an orange tree.

My bed was huge and layered with comforters. I crawled in that first night and slept the sleep of Rip Van Winkle. In fact, I rolled over a few times and heard neighbor's voices, their footsteps as excited as their giggles and exclamations of awe, but I rolled back over and went back to sleep.

When I finally woke, it was nearly night. I wandered down to the kitchens and grabbed some FicLatté and hot rolls. The cook was just closing up for the night.

"How's the library?" I asked.

"I heard it grows every day."

I smiled. This was home.

Sorry about the noise. I'm just pouring some foundations. Unfortunately, we hit an old steam bed, which means there'll be some pilling work for the next few days. Once the foundations are in, the Challenges wing should start to rise from the cool brown earth.

In the meantime, I am delighted that you feel at home here.

I did, of course mean "stream bed". I'm expecting a delivery of new steam beds in a few weeks. Delivery by airship of course. Expect clockwork mechanisms and dark goggles.

I personally thought you had come across the vaporous(?) remains of an old water bed.

I loved this piece - classic Great House kind of writing, instantly warm and familiar.
